To discover and draw out creative talents in the community is a wonderful process. We are thankful to our partner, Neighborhood Advice Action Council Taipo Centre and to each person who has given Migration Memory a future in our imagination and in our city.

I am always interested in topics about memory. This project is especially interesting because Hong Kong is a place with generations of migration memory. Coordinating with our HKU mentors and the community is certainly a challenge. Through this project, I got to meet people with different migration memory in this city and I am deeply intrigued by their stories. I noticed that it takes time to build trust. I hope more people are willing to share their stories after seeing creative work from others. This knowledge exchange project is definitely a great experience for me!

這計劃把我從古史的世界帶進了現代文學的世界,不但拓閣了我的眼界,也刺激了我的思維。在計劃中,我們鼓勵每個人發揮創意,用不同的方式分享他或發生在他身邊的故事。每個人都是唯一的,每個故事都是獨一無二的,每個作品都是珍貴的。從前的世界,給我的是官方的記載和文人雅士寫下傳誦千古的故事。現在的世界,給我的是獨一無二、彌足珍貴的升斗市民故事。兩個世界各有千秋,確實令我裨益不少。

古往今來,「移民」是人類生活的一部分,這並不局限定義在「移居」的唯一概念上,更可包括日常生活不同形式的流動。香港地少人多,但交通尚算方便,大家普遍都可以出入自如,穿梭不同社區。然而,急速的步伐卻容易令我們錯過很多記憶的點滴。由香港大學舉辦的『移民記憶與創意數碼敘事』計劃,就巧妙地讓人重新細想久違了的生活記憶。參與計劃的青少年從中啟動思維,發掘生活的多樣性。回想帶來回味,成長串連故事,昔日事物,今日人情,一一都活起來!

移民記憶工作坊的收穫

這一年,在我們的課餘託管服務中心,竟然匯聚了本土、中國、美國和印尼的移民孩子,又偶然地參加了香港大學的移民記憶工作坊,真是帶給中心導師和孩子們一次奇妙的移民知識交流旅程。

5月初,香港大學的知識交流計劃同事到來中心進行了兩次移民記憶工作坊,在這學習的活動中,帶給了小朋友新鮮而有趣的生活交流經驗,我相信他們在學習的過程中,不單增進了對自我的認識,在創作方面,也得到了一些深刻的啟發和經驗。

在第一次的工作坊的時候,小朋友透過觀看視像去分享別人的移民故事和感想,然後在主持人的指導下,他們要嘗試透過圖畫、紙黏土等藝術媒介去進行自由創作,表達心目中對城市居住環境的印象或想法,在充滿鼓勵創作的氣氛下,每位平日跳蹦蹦的小朋友都能夠安定下來嘗試去進行個人的藝術創作,並且在講解作品的時候,接受了主持人連珠爆發的訪問挑戰,激發起他們對生活的一連串思考活動,…過程中氣氛既是緊張而又刺激,看見每一位小朋友都能夠勇敢地面對觀眾和鏡頭,為自己的創作進行講解和答問,態度認真又用心,聽見他們說出了自己的想法已令人感動,其實有些小朋友是很緊張的,當面對主持人的一連串即場提問時,已感到壓力,身體不由自主地往後面的白牆作依靠,有一些小朋友雖然緊張卻沒有退縮,在緊張心情的影響下,仍快速地轉動腦筋去盡力回應主持人尖銳的提問,不畏面紅耳赤的辯解,就在那一刻,令我發現了中心一些小朋友不在平日課本學習中表現的出來的一面,他們是有不能低估的發展潛能。

第二次工作坊的重點是讓小朋友學習去作一個小記者,學習以發問問題去探究世界,並且敏銳於生活的文化習慣,如時間、食物、玩具等等,還學習裝飾藝術的表達媒介,這些都帶給小朋友知識交流的溝通途徑,雖然現時他們可能都不會鈎畫出這個溝通交流的過程,但是他們收獲的是一個思考、表達、分享和交流的經驗,從交流中促進了彼此的認識,也看見了不同地方的童年玩意文化,例如香港孩子的兒童遊樂場、電腦遊戲機內的刀刀劍劍等,外國流行的棒球棍、印尼孩子的號角等,都帶出了不同地方的文化氣息,豐富了大家的生活眼界和交流的樂趣。

香港大學的知識交流計劃,以移民故事作為主題,將中心來自不同地方移民的孩子凝聚起來,進行了一個別具意義的知識交流活動,讓我們的小朋友一起學習了觀察、思考、表達和分享交流的活動,彼此豐富了大家的生活視野和經驗,我想知識追求的樂趣,不是限於書本的文字旅途上,更在於生活經驗交流的旅程,和別人分享想法和感受的過程中,我們將收獲更多的驚喜、友誼和喜樂,彼此的差異距離縮窄、心卻是愈來愈來接近,徬徨孤單悄然遠飛,我們的生活經驗也默默建構世界新的知識,建設明天更美好的香港故事。

其實是次工作坊的主題及內容相當有意義及有趣的,但可惜仍不能吸引到東涌的街坊,而原因有二
其一,東涌街坊對「移民記憶」的概念,認識不深入。雖然本人或其他同事在宣傳及招募參加者時,講解工作坊的目的及透過不同的媒體,如文字、圖畫、相片、短片等形式去記述「移民的故事」,但可惜反應依然一般。

其二,根據本人及同事的經驗,東涌居民其實需要的是具體而實際上的得著。例如,如果工作坊是具體地教授「拍攝」技術,街坊會清楚地知道他們要學習的是「拍攝」技術,而我們卻可以透過一些「具體而實際」的手法去帶出工作坊的主題。我相信這對參加者會更清楚自己參與小組的動機及目的,以方便招募。

I consider myself a ‘product’ of migration (an intended one, of course. Not a ‘by-product!), but I never really know much about my family’s migration to Australia until I started to engage in this project. From time to time I will pull out photo albums and flip over pictures of my family in Sydney when I was still a baby. I seldom ask my parents about those two years and they rarely talk to me about life in Australia.

During the workshops we held, I heard some interesting stories on migration, and that intrigued me to find out more about my own family’s past. When I talked to my mom about her memory of Australia, she said migration is a one-of-its-kind experience that she simply couldn’t re-live again at other points of her life. From her words, I see that migration is not only a physical relocation but also a mental experience that alters one’s outlook on life.

The experience participating in this project encourages me to actively seek out and uncover stories in people and communities around us. Every single story is of value and it always means something, not only to its teller but more importantly, to its listeners and the community at large.

Culture is always interesting to me and the cultural shocks encountered by immigrants in Hong Kong are valuable to look at in this cosmopolitan city. The workshops designed by the leading mentors and the professor are interactive and interesting and what touches me is that our history and the cultural background somehow shape us for who we are. This project brings me the realization of importance in cherishing memories and I like the ways provided in the workshops that we can turn them into stories. I was born as a Hong Konger so I do not have the experience of emigration or immigration but I have heard of many stories about the difficulties of immigrants from mainland trying to fit in this Cantonese city. Many of them felt inferior due to their identity so the workshops really help in spreading a positive message.
 
I attended a workshop in Tai Po on a Saturday and the participants were going to visit 三門仔. Our project and theirs were similar in the sense that we both stress on memories and the way of life of non-locals. I found that one has to respect your own history. The most unforgettable part was when everyone created a story in the role of a fruit. The teenagers are creative and great story-tellers and we both understood transformation from the previous place to a new place. Emotional changes are described as well.

I hope I can join relevant activities in the future and help myself and others to gain more knowledge of ourselves through culture.
